Australian Children from all walks of life get active after school

2012-02-27

Up to 190 000 children across 3206 schools and out of school hours care services (OSHCS) will be hitting, throwing, catching and jumping this semester in the Australian Government’s Active After-school Communities (AASC) program.
Delivered in every state and territory across Australia, the AASC program will continue to work directly with national, state and local sporting organisations to deliver fun, free and inclusive physical activity programs to children in the after-school time slot.

Of the 3206 schools and OSHCS involved in the program in semester one this year:
* 52 per cent are located in rural and remote communities
* 33 per cent are located in low socio-economic communities
* 6 per cent are located in Indigenous communities
* 15 per cent consist of culturally and linguistically diverse students
* 18 per cent cater to students with special needs.

AASC Deputy General Manager Kitty Chiller said, ‘These statistics are an indication of the extensive reach of the program. It is not about being the best or winning, it is about finding one or more sports that you love and continuing with those sports on a regular basis through a local sporting club or school team.

'Our focus this year will be to strengthen our connections with sport to help transition more children into club and school sport than ever before.
'Through the AASC program, children have access to 70 different sports and up to 20 physical activities. If it wasn’t for the program, a lot of the participating children would never have the opportunity to experience these sports and activities,' Chiller said.

'A big part of the program this year will be to encourage as many AASC sites as possible to sign up for the Prime Minister’s Olympic and Paralympic Challenges which start on 28 May. There is no better event than the Olympic and Paralympic Games to inspire young children to participate in sport.'
The AASC program is an Australian Government initiative delivered by the Australian Sports Commission. The program is currently funded until December 2012.
