Bushfire Relief day for Children in Australia

2003-01-13

The Australian Sports Commission's Active After-school Communities (AASC) program in Gippsland and the Southern Metropolitan region held a Bushfire Relief day for children at the Traralgon South Recreation Reserve.

AASC regional coordinators and community coaches from local clubs organised 12 activities and sports such as archery, dance, martial arts and soccer for children to try.

'Many children tried all 12 stations and it was pleasing to see that parents also took the opportunity to join in the games with their kids, experiencing the activities that take place at AASC sessions, which operate at many local primary schools,' said Victorian AASC State Manager Kate Simkovic.

'We also provided lessons for youngsters not familiar with a particular sport or activity.'

The children were given a special AASC passport which listed the 12 sports and activities. Once they had tried at least four activities or sports and had their passports stamped they could take home a show bag full of AASC goodies.

A number of other organisations contributed to the successful event. A highlight for the crowd was the All Stars versus Emergency Services volleyball match. The All Stars team included Collingwood AFL star Leigh Brown and Olympic basketballer Michele Timms who were popular with the children. Live music was provided by police band Code One.

The Bushfire Relief day is part of the AASC program, which is a fun, free and safe introduction to more than 70 sports and 20 structured physical activities each week. About 150 000 primary school-aged children are currently involved in the program across Australia.
